The distributer & control unit are usually a good place to start - but with gas leaking out the exhaust, something else is wrong...though the distributer could be bad too.
Are you sure the FPR you put in is good? Has your mechanic told you why he thinks the computer is to blame? Is it leaving the injectors open? There is an easy way to check for that...hook up x4 12v light bulbs to the injector pigtails w/as much wire as needed to allow you to tape them to the edge of the dash where you can monitor them. Line up the bulbs so you can easily determine which injector(s) is/are open when the problem occurs.
If the test lamps do not show any odd behavior, I'd suspect bad/leaking injectors - (good opportunity for some Sweedish Dynamics blue tops & a tweaked APC :) If one or more of the injectors is staying open all the time, I guess the computer or wiring to or from it would be likely culprits - 85' was a bad year for wires in general...I have an 85' 900t too & can attest to this personally ~ Good Luck
