not sure how you get the pulley on (or even off) with tension on the belts?? Tension would pull on the pulley, and although you might be able to get it off, I don't see how you could get it back on the water pump...
I changed a water pump today, and couldn't leave the belts on AND get the A/C off at the same time, as I had to loosen the bolt on top of the alternator bracket to get the A/C bracket off, which covers the water pump. Which meant I had to remove the belts from the alternator so it would move far enough away to get that bolt out. (on the 85 the bolt has to come out to get the A/C bracket off... on my 88, the bottom of the A/C bracket is slotted, so you only have to loosen the bolt.) Then I just carefully held the water pump pulley with a big pair of channel-locks, and the 10mm bolts came off easily. Even having to search for a putty knife to get the gasket off, it only took a couple of hours for the whole job. Good thing, because dinner was ready!
