on normally aspirated engines, the battery is held down with a piece of sheet metal, bent at the top that fits along the side of the battery closest to the engine, and is held down with two threaded rods, hooked through slots in the base of the battery cradle.
On turbos, there is a vertical extension on this holding a piece of insulating material, since the exhaust manifold is larger (and hotter?) so closer to the battery...
The extension is about 3/8-1/2 inch thick, and 4-5 inches high.
Is this missing from your car? What is securing the battery so it doesn't bounce?
