Rear Shock removal

I ordered some new rear shocks for my 1989 900S. I went to change them today and the first problem was the top bolts are rusted and would not loosen, I have them soaking with WD-40 now. If that does not work I will cut them off with a Dremel. My question is is how do you get the shocks out when they are loose. The top third of the shock is in a pocket that is part of the body, and the botton does not seeem like it will fit through the hole in the trailing arm. The Bently manual is not much help, it says remove the bolt on the bottom and the nut on top and jack the arm up a little and remove. I must be missing something?
