I believe I have the smoking gun....

From the earlier post a day back...89 Turbo which overheated and died on the highway after a full boost thrashing.
car towed home Friday. Checked the wastegate rod & diaphram, all good. Just about to pull the valvecover to inspect chains, but instead decided to move the dist. and see if she would start....I did, and it did. Timing light on, and it probably required a 30 degree turn of the dist. toward the pass side. All seemed good, idling well, so I decide on a quick road test. All good, until I stepped on it into boost, and suddenly all power lost again, dead. Back out with the 13mm wrench, and put the distributor nearly back where it started from (towards drivers side, maybe not quite 30 degrees but close. car immediately starts and idles again...recheck timing and it goes back to 16".
I am NOT buying that the timing chain is jumping forward/backward. My money says the distributor is bad internally, as every time it sees boost the timing jumps again.
I'd like to hear if others have had this phenomenon....just before I order the distributor rebuild kit (supposedly still available for 86-88 turbo only).
