I'm just about at my whits end with this car. It's an 87 non-turbo that seems to have developed a nasty problem, but only when it rains!
The car starts up just fine, and runs great when cold, but as soon as the temp gauge gets just into the green, the engine dies even if I give a small amount of gas in neutral. I have to feather the gas peddle up to about 2000 RPM then let the clutch out to get going in order to limp home. Anything below 2000 RPM will cause to violently jerk if in gear and already moving. The problem gets progressively worse as the car warms up. The engine still idles, albeit a bit rough and at a lower RPM than usual (700-800). It leads me to believe that the cold start system isn't turning off and the car is running way too rich when warm..but why???
This has been happening like clockwork whenever we get a heavy rain for the past few months. After it stops raining for a day or so, the car works like new again (or if I try to actually diagnose the problem, grrr!!!). I've checked the transient enrichment relay, the WUR is a year old, thermo-time switch is a year old, unplugging the cold start injector does nothing. My next plan of attack is to rip out the wiring harness and see if there are any obvious signs of damage or bad grounds.
Has anybody else had a problem like this before? Any suggestions as to where to check? The car runs great when dry and just passed emissions with flying colors. I'd hate to get rid of it, but if I can't fix this problem I have no choice!
