Miss with tach dropping out?

I am having some trouble with the 88 SPG where it will stumble and miss, sometimes all the way to dying, but the most unusual symptom for me is that the tach is dropping all the way to zero when it is misfiring. Does that point to any probable diagnosis?
I know there is a problem with the fuel pump, as it is droning, but the tach would keep reading until the engine stopped if it ran out of fuel.
