There are three different ones out there.
The earliest had a cartridge that you had to load the CD into.
The next took the CD all by itself.
These two are interchangeable, and should fit in the same cage as the EQ.
These work with the third generation of Saab-Clarion radios, the ones with the knobs for volume, bass & treble & the greenish LCD display that you had to enter the 4 digit code for, which were the 1988 to 1991 radios. They also are CD players only (For the 9000, there was a "3-DN kit" for these years so you could have your cake (CD) and eat it (EQ) too...).
The last version has a CD player, with an LCD display EQ built in, and will also control a CD changer in the trunk. This was from the 1992- Saab Clarion Radio. This CD/EQ is NOT interchangeable with the earlier styles.
1st gen S-C radios: squared-off knobs, Cassette, display centerd on head, EQ with physical sliders No code required. Approximately 1984-1985/6. One white DIN cable between head & EQ.
2nd gen S-C radios: "Flat Face" 6-digit code. Two minor variants. EQ with display and up/dn buttons. Amplifier in EQ cage. One black DIN cable. 1986-1987
3rd gen S-C radios: rounded Knobs, Cassette, greenish LCD display offset to the side, 4 digit code, EQ has up/dn buttons, Amplifier on back of head unit cage, variants for different trim levels. One black DIN cable. 1988-1991
4th gen S-C radios: Similar head to above, but not-interchangeable with them. 4 digit code, Front speaker amp on back of head unit cage. Rear speaker amp separate, under rear seat (under RH front seat on 9k). Black DIN cables with colored tape on ends: Two DIN cables (red & yellow) between head & EQ; One DIN cable (blue) to amp; one DIN cable to CD changer (green) in trunk. 1992-end of production.
The cages on the 2nd to 3rd gen look quite a bit alike, but you can't put a different gen radio in the cage. On way they did that was to rotate the connections 90 degrees. If I recall, the 3rd gen connections are horizontal, and the 4th gen are vertical. (it could be the other way 'round, too)
