thanks for the suggestions so far. i hooked up a voltmeter to the starter and it registered 12+ volts when the key was turned to start. a screwdriver moved the flywheel so the engine should turn over. i knocked the starter a few times with an extension and hammer and still nothing.

so i pulled the starter out and connected the two terminals to the battery directly, no turning. it should turn at that point, correct? assuming it should spin, looks like i'm ordering a new starter tonight. hopefully it comes in a couple days so i can get it back in.

any other thoughts/suggestions? thanks again.
