After I saw how worn the latch was in my car, I replaced the catch. Put a better seal in, and then came the procedure to adjust the latch. Put down the rear seat, and go head first so you can adjust the latch from the inside. Line it up from the outside and gently tighten the latch. Then get inside and have a helper depress the hatch enough to compress the seal slightly and then tighten the two bolts. Make sure the catch is pulled up when you tighten the bolts, and that should make it shut like a bank vault.
We are scuttling an 89 SPG that has a decent gasket and a new looking catch that fits on the hatch if you have need for them.
