I'm posting this for my little bro who has a tendency to leave out pertinent info....unfortunately, I have a propensity to include too much. Thanks in advance for your patience & interest.

As background, we're talking about an 87' SPG w/270+k. I've done mucho recent (within last 20k) work on then car, including but not limited to:

~ Repl clutch, slave, TOB & spigot, resurface flywheel, rear crank seal, rblt master - turbo (tight used unit) & bypass valve - new style timing chain tensioner - alt bushings (1st poly, then rubber 10k later) - front crank seals - water pump, belts, hoses & G05 coolant - axle drivers, seals & inner cv tripod joints - front & RS motor mounts - brake pads (twice), & rotors - ball joints & tie rod ends - axle tunnel rust abatement - complete hyd fluid & trans oil flush (twice) - rbld distributor - nice crack free dash & spiffy stereo ~

Soooo, that's what I did...& it cost bro at least a couple of grand (don't have invoices handy...but there were numerous freebies & excessive attention to detail). This is a well cared for car in VG running order (w/great boost) when the transaxle gave up last month. I was not available to do a tranny RR (I have kids & live 4hrs away), so bro had to take his car to a shop (Saab Indy) for the 1st time ever. Paying $95 an hr vs the $50 I charge was a real shocker! The bill came to aprox $3200, which doesn't sound absurd. The problem is that the orig quote was for $2300 + a few hundred more to address some assundry issues. The labor to RR the trans out the bottom was a paltry 4hrs (damn!)...w/another 4hrs for the "other stuff".

Parts:

- Eriksson trans $2150 (last I knew these were $1500)
- pan gasket $38 (only $15 thru eEuroparts)
- dipstick (?) $60 (both were fine previously)
- oil filter $11 (old filter pretty new w/mileage written on it)
- 4.5 qts oil $18 (dino for $4 per qt...jeez)
- headlamp bulb $14 (there was a spare in a door pocket)
- drain plug washer .85c (new magnetic plug & washer on old trans)
- wiper delay relay $61 (just $13 thru eEuro - MAJOR mark up & a used one would've been fine)
- shop supplies $18 (reasonable)

Labor:

- trans 4hrs (amazing)
- other* 4hrs (ok other than being twice what was quoted)

[*splice in "new" driver door wiring harness, repair door lock ground tap, turn f rotors]

Bro got raked over the coals on the parts, but frankly, the labor charges seem reasonable. I mean, 4hrs to RR a trans...wOw & the door wiring accounts for close to 2hrs alone.

Aside from that, there were some problems like grease on the door panels (brand new), carpet & seats...rude irritable mechanic...eng now runs rough...turbo stuck at base boost........& the biggie; two broken studs on the exh manifold.

The grease can be cleaned & the rough running has yet to be vetted (only one tank of gas so far). The lack of boost is prob something simple (all obvious stuff checks out ok...no loose pipes, vac hoses, bypass valve, solenoid all fine), so I'm referring bro to the Townsend site. The manifold studs are going to be a big deal though. The two closest to the turbo are broken (fell out when finger tightened). There was no apparent noise until the day after the car was picked up...then poppoppoppoppop.

The shop denies any culpability. I don't see how they could be responsible either, EXCEPT that everything was hunky dory before the shop touched the car & having the studs fall out 24hrs after they finished major under hood operations is too much of a coincidence. Fwiw, I did NOT remove the manifold when I put in the repl turbo two years prior. It's prob a 5hr ordeal to RR the cly head (studs broken off at or below surface) & drill/tap the busted studs......yesch.

As always, any/all opinions are welcome. Happy Thanksgiving!
