The LH harness is basically a drop-in replacement. What makes the '85 special is the run of wiring across the firewall to the fusebox. On the '85, that run of wires is part of the LH harness with the big connectors by the fusebox. On the '86+ cars, that wiring is part of the fusebox with the big connectors by the cabin air intake.
What I did on my '85 was cannibalize a fusebox from an '88... I traced the wiring right up to the connectors *inside* the fusebox and cut them off. On my '85, I then pared those wires back til the insulation was in good shape, and spliced the '88 wiring to the '85 fusebox. That left me with more than enough to get the wiring to the cabin air intake so I could mate up with a later-style LH harness.
It's not a difficult job - there are only a few wires on a turbo, fewer if you (like me) ripped out your AC system already.
On all three of the '85s I've owned (a 4-door, a 3-door, and an SPG, all turbos) the major wiring issues were:
1. The LH harness
2. The tiny group of wires from the fusebox to the oil pressure, engine temp, alternator, etc
3. Any exposed wiring down by the radiator - usually the ground wires, APC solenoid wiring, and the ignition coil.
4. Knock sensor and Hall sensor wiring
It's a big PITA to address everything. However, if you can get your hands on a complete ~'88 fusebox that's just about everything you need to make those repairs if you've got the patience to do so. When you peel back the corrugated wire sheaths and remove all the electrical tape, I'd encourage you to get an electrical cleaner and clean up the tape residue and 25 years of grime. IMHO, the petroleum byproducts that get trapped around the wiring is as much responsible for the issue as plain ol' heat.
Also, FWIW, I don't think it's that difficult to retrofit an entire later fusebox into the car. I have an '86 fusebox on my '80, and there were only a handful of connections that were wrong. *Most* stuff stayed in the same place over the years. Of course, doing this you'd end up with your APC box under the hood, but that's not such a bad thing. I haven't been able to find a good donor '86 fusebox for my '85, but I have been looking. An '87+ fusebox is similar, but the head- and corner lighting changed, and that's just more variables. ;)
