Best place is the shortest distance. You can get power for the gauge lighting from the light in the ashtray. That light is only on when you have the lights on. You can get power to run the gauges from the cigarette lighter. That power is on when the key is in the on position. You can ground to any metal part of the car body nearby. Or connect to the ground at the cigarette lighter. If you take out the lower dash console, you can easily access both the ashtray light and the cigarette lighter from underneath the dash. I have done the cigarette lighter connection by just pulling the dash switches on either side of it and reaching a finger through each hole to pull the plug off the back of the lighter. Then you can pull the plug out through one of the openings to solder wires to it. Then you won't have to remove the dash console, but it takes a little dexterity to do it that way.
