RayF,
Bearings are commonly available with either steel "shields" or neoprene "seals". The shields are intended to protect against large particles and impact while seals are intended to keep out fluids, vapors and fine particles. A "shielded" bearing won't exclude fluids or really fine particles so, since C900 front wheel bearings are fairly well protected from impact but not water and such, a "sealed" bearing is used there. "Seals" are made of a very thin steel ring covered with neoprene having lips on it's inner and outer edges to exclude fluids and fine matter while "Shields" are made of thicker stainless steel with no neoprene component at all. Most common bearings are also available as an "open" bearing having neither seals or shields. The bearing on the left in the attached picture has a black neoprene seal. All the SKF C900 front wheel bearings that I've ever used have a reddish-orange colored seal but other brands may have seals of other colors.
