I'm not sure what your mechanic means by that on a 9-5. My understanding was that the automatics in those are virtually bomb-proof. There are other things to watch, but the tranny should not be a big worry. My indy has multiple high mileage 9-5 owners (like 300+ k miles).
Dexron is the right stuff for the 9-5 4 speed automatic in the older cars (mine is 5 speed that uses toyota IV). My understanding was that both trannies are similarly robust.
the c900 is a different story + that 3 speed automatic needs lots of care + feeding (or invest in a parts car with a good working stick)... I actually think they work ok for what they are, but imho for sure the weak point on the car.
