The fit at the front is determined by the stops and pads that meet the stops, as well as the fit of the body panel to the 'chassis'. I think this fit is altered when new headliners are done without the strip of plastic holding the front of the fabric to the metal. Usually new material is installed by wrapping up and over the front of the panel.
I think you could fine tune the fit against the front by shimming the fit where it is held by the four screws at the front edge.

Thin strips of something non-absorbent - probably plastic, with holes at the screw locations. But I think this only allows adjusting to the rear, not forward to tighten the joint.
I have seen cars with manual sunroof where the two stops at the front were noticeably bent by agressive closing of the sunroof.
Some cautious use of a heavy hammer and a block of hardwood might move the stops forward to close the gap at the front.
I will be doing a headliner on my '87 900T in the near future and I'll post if I figure anything worthwhile.
