They are not bad at all. I've never driven a 9-3 vert, but the 9-3's I have driven have felt fast and fun (with lots of torque steer)... handling is not as tight as a c900, but that may not be a concern if one is getting a vert anyway. Nice cars. Definitely make sure it has a good oil change history preferably with full synthetic every 5k max and as ZAAB points out PCV#6 (Swedecar's photo gallery has a photo of what to look for)...
That said, I think the parts generally are a little more costly than c900 parts, and in some ways they are not as robust (and fewer parts are repairable)... but being newer, parts should be a bit more available for longer... we considered a 9-3 hatch, but ended up getting a 9-5: it's more solid than the 9-3 and handles better, but a little less fun...
oh yeah, and manuals are not rare... I would say it is 50/50 manual/automatic around here for the 9-3.
