Interesting as I thought about whether one could just plug that as I was able to find a substitute grommet initially for the return line but not the vent line. I actually had stuck a wine cork in it initially just to keep from getting high on the gas fumes. My concern was that it would create a vacuum in the fuel tank leading to further problems.
As it turned out, I was able to get some nice grommets off of an '89 vert in the wrecking yard. Had to drop the tank to get at the smaller return line, showing that all of the later improvements did not make the car easier to work on. See fuel filter confusion from earlier. As it turns out, it is under the hood in an easy to access location.
