For buying back the car, there is usually no negotiation. They give you a price, and that's what they deduct from your check. In some cases, they may not even put a price on it. I had a small accident with a 1990 900, and they gave me $600 in total, never took the car, and I drove it another three years. I hit a bear with my 1999 9-5, Ins. declared a "total loss", I bought the car from them (sold the drivetrain to my mechanic), and they took $500 off the settlement check.
Unless the car is really special to you, or you could use it for parts, or the damage is very minor, AND you can do all the work yourself, it is often not worth buying it back. Think about it carefully, before ending up in a deeper hole...
