S,
Don't get me wrong, I'm not just trying to argue and I'm all for imaginative techniques that simplify big jobs but a long time ago I once tried to unscrew that stud with vice grips with the engine in place, it backed out until it hit the bulge in the timing cover and wouldn't go any farther. So I ended up unbolting the units from each other anyway. More importantly, as you have stated, creating a good seal between the two units upon re-assembly would be nearly impossible. Also if you are trying to remove the timing cover with both the head and transmission in place you'll find that the timing cover is actually pinched pretty good between the two and it must be drawn straight off and replaced the same. You'd never get a good seal at both the transmission and the head gasket and what a leaker you'd have.
