Idle and running issues

I've recently acquired a '90 model 900i with only 80.000 km (50.000 miles!) on the clock. The car was parked 3 years ago by the previous owner because of starting issues. I towed the car home, dropped in a new battery and it started on first try. It ran beautifully for about 30 seconds, after which the idle dropped down to about 5-600 rpm. The engine died immediately when I touched the gas pedal.
As the gas tank was almost empty and the car had been standing for three years I thought this would be due to bad fuel and/or the pre-pump. Filling the tank with fresh fuel had no effect. Ruling out bad fuel, and probably the pre-pump.
Next I replaced the fuel filter. No change.
By accident I discovered that introducing a vacuum leak made the idle much better. The engine still stalls when the gas pedal is pressed too rapidly. By slowly pressing the gas pedal (keeping the engine at vacuum) I'm able to run up it to red-line.
I tried disconnecting the air mass metre to no avail.
The check engine light is on, but I have so far been unable to locate the test plug to read the error codes, or rather I've probably found it but grounding the pin doesn't seem to work. Still looking into that.
Any ideas for what to try next would be appreciated.
Cheers
