Fuel Pump Issue: Electrical or Mechanical?

So i pulled into my garage this evening, turned the car off and had to run out again after a few minutes so i turned the key and ................... well, the car was cranking strong and all the lights seemed fine but it wouldn't kick over. Remembering how many times I had to rap the fuel pump on my '73 MGB to unstick the pump, I got to the fuel pump in the trunk and tapped on the top of it with a small hammer and the car started right up. so ...... i never have replaced the pump since i bought the car @ 170,000 miles. it now has about 240,000. is it probably a mechanical issue rather than, say, a bad electrical plug connection at the pump? - i jiggled the connector a bit just to make sure it wasn't loose. but i'm assuming the pump should be replaced, but is there anything else i should look at? Thanks!
