I don't think it is that easy to tell the transmission year from rpm/speed guestimates. How accurate do you know your speed etc? It doesn't hurt to check that all the vin's match up etc, but all the autos do pretty high rpms on the highway and different engine combos will have slightly different behaviour. Our winter beater is a 1989 2.0L NA with an autobox that I'm certain is original. It's for sure up around 3500rpms on the highway, and prior to disconnecting the kick-down I accidentally downshifted it once at highway speeds - yikes! RPM needle pinged back and forth like a pendulum! Car was fine though.
Personally, I'd keep an eye out for a known good donor 5speed car, and otherwise drive and maintain it.
