Replacing Hall Effect Sensor in distributor

I was getting intermittent stalling issues when the engine was hot, leading me to believe I had a failing Hall effect sensor in the distributor. I bought a replacement from eEuroparts and now have the distributor disassembled. The problem is the generic replacement sensor is a lot smaller than the original. I thought I would drill out the rivets on the original and then mount the new sensor on a small piece of aluminum or hard plastic to get it in the right position, but before I did that, I wondered if anybody else had done this and had any better ideas?
Thanks
Rod
