Some of us sometimes do things the hard way. I'd say you definitely are.
First step to me, check the ground wire out, alternator still in car. If bad or questionable, replace, check car out.
Second step, pull voltage regulator-brush pack, alternator still in car, after disconnecting battery negative terminal. If brushes are too short, that might be the problem. Anyway if you have another regulator in your parts, try swapping that in, check car out. You can get at the regulator screws with a LONG handled phillips screwdriver, angled up just over the oil pressure sender, with everything untouched, still in car, no need to adjust belts or anything.
If first and second steps failed to cure it, then and only then would I have pulled the alternator to take for testing.
