The factory skid plate is adequate for the sort of low speed, paved surface impact and abrasion encountered during daily urban driving.

The rally skid plate is constructed of 1/4" aluminum plate, about 2'x3', attached at the front and rear crossmembers. It curves down from the bottom of the radiator and continues to the back of the powerplant, providing complete coverage. The plate has a hole drilled in it to allow access to the oil drain plug.

The stock plate offers little protection during high extension suspension travel. The first heavy hit my plate took occurred on a forest road in the hills east of Cottage Grove. I came tearing around a corner, only to find that a small rivulet had cut a 4 inch trench across the road. The bounce was brain jarring, but the plate came away with no more than a couple of scratches.

As Landjet said, the hardest part will be finding one. I've only seen one offered since I found mine 5 Years ago. You might try looking for Saab rally sites. Well worth the effort IMHO.

One of my favorite drives is from the north gate of Crater Lake, past Diamond Lake and down the north fork of the Umpqua to Glide, then crossing the river and taking the river road out to I-5.

Though for a good time, little compares with a break of dawn power run up the western side of McKenzie Pass;)

Happy Sabbing!

Blacksheep
