I've had good luck from a dirt cheap solution. I bought a few sets of Bosch replacement brushes, from I think it was the Saab site, and have installed them on pulled old Bosch regulators. They work fine.

There was a trick to unsoldering the old ones. I think they were crimped into a copper "neck", and maybe I drilled them out? And to installing the new - - you need to allow just enough slack for full potential travel of the brush, then pull the braided wire over sideways to hold that setting and solder em home.

As to smoothing the slip rings, you can easily do that with alternator out of car by holding a file against them and hand turning the pulley till they're smooth. Or, do same in car, with the belts off and battery disconnected.

I like the quick in-car regulator swap, a LONG ("cabinet") phillips screwdriver, angled in from just over the oil pressure sender. Even though the angle isn't perfectly square, tap it a bit as you keep the loosening pressure on and screws should start free, then spin out. Phillips screws are forgiving.

On reinstall, that "scooping" or twisting motion, down and in and contacting rings with brushes and then pushing it up into place, is the key. No floss needed. Hold it firmly down on its seat and get one screw started and in almost to tight, then twist it till second screw is lined up with its hole.
