There is a little steel ball bearing that slides into the hole, then the spring. Don't forget that -- it's what the spring is pushing on. As you are looking at the open bolt pattern, it is in the upper left - look along the same elevation as the shift shaft that goes through the case and it would intersect that point. There should be only one hole that is available for the spring / ball to go within.
