Had plans to swap in either the old one, or one for the right side on the left. (Yeah, no, that doesn't work too well.) Anyway...
I figured before I got too deep in anything, I'd see if I could bleed the brakes. The bleeder on the old left one was complete frozen and snapped off rather than come out, which was one of three reasons I changed it in the first place. And the right side one is identical in age and condition, so I was hoping I wouldn't have to deal with that today. Bleeding the one wheel completely restored the brakes. So, that's good.
However, in the process, I saw just how much the leak had gotten worse. It now squirted almost to the other side of the car! So...
I got to work trying to get the broken bleeder out of the old caliper. LOts of PB Blaster, a blow torch, a hammer, and vice grips. In between waiting for something to penetrate, I prepared the leaky one for removal, removed the cap over the adjuster and backed it off. After a fruitless and frustrating hour or two, I gave up. I put everything back together, gave the cap screw an extra quarter crank just out of frustration, AND THE LEAK STOPPED!!!
But, why? Was it actually leaking from the adjuster cap screw and not the brake lever the whole time? I had checked for that, I thought, and the immediate area around the screw and washer had been dry. Besides, another of the three reasons I had changed the old caliper was that I had lost the cap screw and adjuster gear long enough ago that everything inside had rusted and an attempt at replacing the gear just stripped out when I tried to free up the adjuster. And yet, with the cap screw completely gone, presumably for years, it had never leaked.
So, what's going on? I'm baffled.
