RS-- Just to keep you and others in the loop, I took another stab at reassembling the indicator stalk/housing this evening. One thing I learned is that the copper cross connector, the one I reported would not allow continuity regardless of directional switch position, appears to control the headlight dimmer function. As I decipher it, pulling back on the stalk enables contact between the cross connector and the brass/copper grounding lug, thereby sending a pulse of current to the dimmer relay to effect change from bright to dim and vice versa.
GTK, I guess, but I'm still not out of the woods. My reassembled housing unit/turning stalk still does not activate directional lamps and, in fact, when I test the signal stalk position/functionality, all I get now is a growl from the flasher relay (hazards still work) and very odd behavior in the headlights.
Bottom line: I'm ready to pop for a known-good turn signal stalk/module for my '89 with cruise control. I sent the email we discussed last eve by phone, hope to hear back soon. If anyone else has tips and/or parts, please let me know. I want, I NEED to be back in my car!
