Thinking about preventative measures, all of these clocks are getting pretty old, so even your donor may not have too many years left in it. The usual reason they break is bad capacitors. Replacing the capacitors while the instrument cluster is out is relatively easy work - less than half an hour with a soldering iron. See the link below. I'd hate for you to have the one you put in break on you before you've completely forgotten what a pain it was to take the cluster out.
The capacitors are 47uF and 100uF. Both must be rated 16v or higher. A 35v is probably the biggest one that might fit.
