When the latch on my car failed I found that the easiest (and least destructive) thing to do is to remove the bumper (2 6mm allen bolts) and use a few extensions on your ratchet to reach the 2 10mm hex bolts that hold the latch assembly to the upper crossmember.
Remove them and you should be able to lift the front of the hood up enough to release the cable from the latch and open the hood all the way.
