Tim,
Thank you for posting at TSN!
The USA market 1993 900 should employ the BOSCH LH fuel management systems which could be confirmed by looking for the BOSCH name on any fuel component such as the air mass meter, etc.
Your symptoms of fuel odor or hard engine starting may be as simple as a detached intake manifold vacuum line. It would also be possible that your odor is the result of a fuel injector seal failure at the intake manifold. The leak causes a loss in engine vacuum, as this seal allows for bypassing of air, but at engine stop, vacuum is no longer present, providing an opportunity for fuel to enter the past the bad seal which may generate odor.
Most shops would confirm that an O-ring seal compromise using a starting fluid test. They begin by bringing the engine to idle, and then spraying starting fluid at the intake manifold to fuel injector mating. A bad seal would allow for starting fluid to enter past the compromised O-ring and into the engine combustion which typically creates a rise in to idle speed, and then return to normal speed after the fluid is no longer present in the combustion.
Thanks again for posting at TSN, and we will look forward to your progress!
Sincerely,
Gary K. at SWEDISH DYNAMICS, INC.
