John,
Thank you for posting at TSN!
The SAAB 2.1 liter naturally aspirated engine after 1991 allows for several exhaust system options for enhancement.
We always found the best engine performance results will be achieved with employment of a 45mm exhaust system plumbing diameter which will keep the NA exhaust velocities directional which may provide a 4-5 engine horsepower provision plus an improved fuel economy. Although we offered a performance exhaust system for the NA 900, this was discontinued over 5 years ago. This system employed a 38mm long straight through single resonator in 45mm diameter, and a pleasant exhaust vocal.
Because the SAAB 2.1 NA 900 employed the same catalyst bolt pattern as the turbocharged 900, the option to install the OEM turbo exhaust system would be an option, although this was in 60mm, which reduces the exhaust velocities, and engine performance may only show a 2-3 horsepower improvement.
You may search your local area for exhaust shops for custom installation of a system as many may quote for a SS option.
Thanks again for posting at TSN, and please contact with any questions!
Sincerely,
Jay P. at SWEDISH DYNAMICS, INC.
