leaking water jacket in turbo unit Posted by SwedishDynamicsInc [Email] (#2304) [Profile/Gallery] (more from SwedishDynamicsInc) on Sat, 29 Feb 2020 14:48:02 In Reply to: Re: leaking water jacket in turbo unit, Saabina [Profile/Gallery] , Fri, 28 Feb 2020 15:43:32 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Thank you for this reply!
The cylinder head gasket issues vary greatly from loss of oil or coolant, thermal expansion fromengine running temperatures, and more. When experiencing a potential cylinder head gasket problem with the B202 engine, and steam reported as exiting the exhaust system, many shops will bring this car to full operating temperatures, and shutting down the engine immediately when steam exits the tailpipe. The spark plugs, if immediately removed will typically show one or more spark plugs which have a change in color or appear wet. The spark plug test should only show what cylinder/s may be compromised, but a good choice prior to a compression of leak-down test at all 4 cylinders.
Saabina makes an excellent point relative to cylinder head bolt retorque as many find this eliminates the need for a replacement gasket. The 10 cylinder head bolts are also yield hardware designed to stretch when under full tightening torque specifications. These bolts should be discarded once removed, and replaced with new OEM hardware. Many shops have found that an inexperienced mechanic may reuse the original cylinder head hardware which or installs aftermarket hardware which may cause future cylinder head gasket issues if not corrected.
Thanks again, and we will be open until 7PM EST if there are any additional suggestions!
Sincerely,
Gary K. at SDI
