I don’t have the failed emissions numbers in front of me ( they are in the car, at the mechanics ), though I do recall that the car failed all 3 of the categories, badly!
And one more thing I failed to mention, the check engine light came on about a year ago, and hasn’t gone off since, in other words it has stayed on. Another mechanic I used at the time, said not to worry about it. Though my current mechanic thinks it’s an issue ( both the failed emissions, and the check engine light ) with the car thinking the throttle is somehow wide open on full, hence the check engine light! ( the car uses a ton of gas BTW ).
And yes, my new guy replaced the oxygen censor as a first idea of fixing the problem.
On the question of timing, I haven’t had a tune up in a long time. And on the issue of a exhaust leak, I did recall thinking I smelled exhaust, but my new guy didn’t seem to think there was a leak.
I’m going to show him all the ideas you folks have posted, and see what he thinks!
