Roger, Apologies if you've dealt with the drain plug fiasco before and you know all of this but the drain plug bores have a factory installed stainless steel threaded insert. That's one reason that trying to just weld them up often fails to work. When the case cracks around the plug the insert can be damaged. The fix is to rip out the damaged insert, weld the case, bore and tap the case and install a new insert. Kind of a tedious task and no fun to do overhead with the car on a lift.
