If your VR brushes weren't riding flush and the contacts were corroded, then that was almost certainly the problem.
Couldn't say why the battery light stays on.
Are the belts tensioned properly?
All of the wiring you dealt with during replacement is properly re-attached, snug?
Crappy VR on the rebuilt alt? If you installed a rebuilt alternator that wasn't rebuilt by Bosch, then it likely has the cheapest VR out there, and perhaps that is the issue? I don't know. But I've always read to use only Bosch VRs. Unless someone has a better answer, then you might look at the VR on the new alt. Not Bosch? If the old one is, AND its brushes are in good shape (i.e., you can straighten the bent one, they are long enough, are pretty much the same length, and the ends are parallel to each other), AND you're confident that all of the wiring associated with the alt. has been re-fitted well, then you might install it.
The oil pressure light isn't working because you knocked the wire off the sensor, which is easy to do. :-) Find the wire near the oil filter (toward the alt.), or near/under the alt. The sensor is right above the oil filter -- it's just a single spade connector.
I'm going to guess it's coincidence that your odo isn't working. In my experience, it stops because a pot-metal gear that is press-fit onto the odo shaft begins to slip, which causes the odo to stop odo'ing. There are also plastic (nylon) gears that can split, but I've only seen the metal ones begin to slip. You can fix the metal type without having to find parts, assuming that's the problem, of course, by removing the odo, taping all of the odo wheels in place with blue painter's tape, then pulling the metal gear off and gently squeezing a small collar of metal at its hole. I wouldn't do this on these instructions alone. Search the web for, say, 1980s VDO odometer/speedometer repair. The nylon gears are being made -- search around.
