More direct power, fewer relays. Posted by PaulS [Email] (#676) [Profile/Gallery] (more from PaulS) on Mon, 12 Jun 2023 09:33:49 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Calvin made some good points on getting electrical power throughout a classic 900. Here is his original post.

On longer time scales (now they're all 30+ years old) it becomes more of an issue due to physical degradation, increased resistance at terminals due to corrosion, etc.
Window motors are a great example if you ask me of routing power through the switch which leads to a degraded performance.
Another is the AC wiring. The relay is like 10 pins, which is complex enough, but on 2 of my 900s the relay gets hot and some of the pins have melted the seat of the connectors.
High current devices should be the shortest runs possible, with relays fed by switches in the interior of the car so you're not running 20 amps over a 10 foot cable there and back. Or, example, you use a thermoswitch to control the fan relay, you don't power the fan through the thermoswitch.

There is lots of good stuff that is worthy of starting a new thread. Classic 900 wiring is somewhat elegant in design but not so great in actual use over long periods. Anyone who has a 4-door, 2-door or convertible knows the woes of the lousy wiring to the rear lights. (Somewhat off topic, my 9-3 sport sedan has very similar wiring problems to the rear lights. Too much power flowing through a too small connector.)
I too have melted connectors in the fuse box on factory wiring.
So has anyone modified the wiring to the window lift motors? I'd love to see the wiring diagram.
It is tempting to replace the factory fan with an aftermarket installation. I have a 93S where the second fan only comes on when the A/C is on. There is a factory service bulletin on how to retrofit but I'd prefer not to do that. I am thinking modern fans that drew less current and a relay could be an easy, practical fix.
Finally, does anyone have a good source for high-quality electrical connectors. The stuff at Harbor Freight or the big box stores doesn't seem high quality to me.
