Having completed this task a few months ago, I can give you my take.
First of all, I hope you found new factory original grommets. I tried used and makeshift weed-eater grommets to no avail. The factory grommets are very, very durable. You will have a better experience dropping the tank. The confined work area will be frustrating and you will be looking upside down or on your knees in the car. There were four grommets on my 1986 16 valve T. Two large and two small. Lube the grommets with plumbers grease, wheel bearing grease or even Vaseline. Install the grommet first, then lube up the hard plastic fittings the same way. It's a very tight fit. Apply equal and consistent pressure.
Steve Lewis in England has the grommets. I would imagine SAABits has them also. Price was around $17 per grommet from Steve.
While you've gone to all this trouble, you may want to replace any deteriorated fuel lines or the check valve if your car has one.
Replacing the fuel pump, bellow, grommets, check valve, etc. etc. Took about six weeks in my spare time to source the parts.
Good luck.
Would love to hear your success story.
