Do you actually need a new alternator, or is the problem just the brush/regulator assembly? In nearly 40 years of owning C900s whenever I've had an alternator problem it's turned out to just be the latter and that can be replaced with the alternator still in the car.
Not sure what a shop would charge, most would not be familiar with the C900 at all. Even back in the day unless Saab specialists most mechanics would look at that "backwards" engine and just shake their heads.
It may be possible to come up with an approximation. You didn't say what year, so I'll use my 1986 900S. On eeuroparts.com a rebuilt Bosch alternator goes for about $156.00. Figure a shop is going to mark that up at least 50%, maybe 100%, so $234.00 to $312.00 for the part. Although I have not had to pull an alternator myself from what I've read it's a bit of a pain, where the bracket has to be rotated to allow room for one of the bolts to come out. Also the alternator is mounted in rubber bushings which may have to be replaced. (Those are only a couple of dollars each but currently out of stock at eeuroparts.) So for a mechanic not familiar with the C900 say the job might take 2 hours with shop charge of $150/hr. I'd estimate the range is probably going to be $500 to $600 or so for the job.
Obviously this is a very rough back-of-the-envelope type calculation. Maybe someone else here might have had the job done recently and can share their experience.
