Trouble reinstalling chain tensioner

My son and I are putting an 86 900 Turbo back on the road. We are rolling in a new chain and have run into an issue getting the new tensioner back in. I can get it partially threaded back in but it is hanging up, gets really tight. I have checked the threads in the head and can't feel anything and the threads in the tensioner don't look like it is going in wrong. Any ideas where to look, I really don't want to force it.
Thanks
