All the parts stores say this. A new outer CV will cost you about $125 on the web. A whole rebuilt shaft, as you know, is a lot cheaper than that. The problem with rebuids is that they take shafts that are God-knows how worn and abused, repack them with grease, add new boots and a paint job and call it a day. If the joint is really shot they machine it and install new ball bearings. The problem with machining is that they machine away the hardened metal surfaces, which weakens the joint. If this is just a commuter car that you don't see yourself having 2 or 3 years from now, then I would go for the rebuilt shaft. If it is a car you really care about, or a car that has a lot of power and you drive it hard, then go with the new joint. They will last longer.
