Hey Kevin,
Sounds to me like you're in a similar situation to myself, young, under parental influence, and wanting to do what YOU want to do. Well, i was given my first 86 900 8v by my mother who continued the tradition on with a 95 900S (a darn fast car!). Within 3 months, i was ready for the maintenance i needed, equiped with a bently manual, and spent most of my earnings on a few tools. I started working on it myself and this helps cut costs GREATLY, but be aware, it's great to have a mechanic in line to help you when you need it too. Anyway, that car met an unfortunate end this summer....so i'm now settling into a 86spg.
You need to know what side of the SAAB fence you're on. If you want to maintain your car and run smooth, then you're fine. Learn to do the stuff yourself and you'll be suprised how much $$ the repair bill was labour (i am by no means discounting the wonderful help and service i have received from my Saab mechanic, it's just expensive for a young person).
If you want to be on the tuning side, spending your cash at SPG9, then be aware, it's gonna cost you. Maybe save that for when your insurance starts going down (i'm only 11 months away!!!)
Long and short, get a bently, check this board daily, learn to do it yourself, DON'T race the car (SAABS do not race off the line well, you'll loose the race and your tranny shortly after) you'll be fine.
