I have a question for the C900 board - My girlfriend's '87 SPG is wearing out, or at least getting to the point where to get it minty fresh or even sub-par will cost more than she wants to spend. The odometer has been broken (reads 687,000ish right now) but actual mileage is closer to 200,000 miles. The tranny is getting like all c900 trannies get when old - picky and loose (one must pause in N before completing the 1-2 shift). The clutch has worn out (you can shift the car without it anyway...). A bolt has broken on the exhaust manifold so not only is it noisey, but I suspect boost pressure might be affected (and it is too expensive to fix @ $300-400). The interior blower keeps blowing fuses and she was told that would be a $400 job to diagnose/replace the blower due to a short. AC is dead. And lastly, the paint has seen better days as it has flaked off of the roof and hood.
Positives - the SPG panels are faded, but present. The wheels are in good shape, the car still handles mostly like an SPG (harsh, sporty ride with less roll and great turn-in though it feels like the power steering needs adjusted, fluid or a new rack). Interior leather is in OK shape i.e. no terrible cracks. It still has the oft-debated SAAB window vane-thingy on the back.
If I had extra cash on hand, I would gut the thing and turn it into a mean street machine or a rally car. However, I don't so she wants to either sell it or donate it to a charity (tax write-off). The question is, which is the better choice? We can't part it out ourselves, but figure that it is worth more in parts than it is for transportation so she would be happy to sell it to a Saab nut (via Saabnet) who wanted it as a parts car (or a Saab nut who wanted to put the effort into restoring it).
What would you do?
Please reply to this post as I intentionally left my email blank to discourage anyone from sending offers or the like. This is purely a question and if the car will be sold, it will be posted on Saabnet.
Thanks,
A McD
