Back about a year ago when I was experiencing similar reservoir boil-over problems with my '86 900T (154K), I wound up replacing the coolant, t-state, temp relay, fan thermoswitch and reservoir cap. No problem since then. Temp needle usually now never goes past the 25% mark.
Get a NEW 82-degree OEM t-stat as used or aftermarket t-stats could cause problems. The fan relay fix was critical as I think the root problem was that the original relay was shot so the fans were not functioning properly or at all. The relay fix makes both fans run at the lower temp providing extra protection. The fix can be found on the Townsand site. The thermoswitch was also the 82-degree companion to the t-stat and is also providing extra cooling protection.
After these remedies if you are still overheating, you may have a blocked radiator or an air bubble in the coolant system. Bleed coolant till no air bubbles. New radiator needed if previous fixes don’t work.
