humming front end

I have a 1986 900SPG, 250,000kms, 5-speed. I've started to hear a “humming” noise coming from the front end, left side. It increases in pitch as speed increases, and seems to be getting progressively louder. It doesn't make any difference whether the car is in gear or the clutch is depressed. I'm thinking it must be the tire, but is there anything else it could be? Everything seems tight, no play in the steering wheel or the front wheel itself
