Probably not the entire alternator, just the brushes on the voltage regulator.
I found it out the hard way - on a dark, rainy night near the Northway (I87, just south of Saratoga, NY)
It's not a hard job to replace it. There are 2 slotted screws on the voltage regulator. Unhook the battery. You need a looong screwdriver to get to them. But once you get it undone (and not drop the screws), it's 3 minutes to put the new one in. Don't get the NAPA (Echlin) part. It doesn't fit properly.
