The original guides on my 91 2.3 T are metal. They appear to my (non-expert) eye to be aluminum. They are burnished a coppery color, but when scratched show silver metal. There is a rubber-like plastic fastened to the metal, on which the chain rides. The part number on the sliding side rail is 911431.

Also, I am getting ready to reinstall the timing cover. Do I not use Loctite 518 on the top of the cover where the headgasket is. Haynes appears to say no, but the Townsend site (headgasket write-up) says to put 518 on the seams (looking at the top of the block) between the front and rear engine covers when installing the headgasket. I am tempted to use a little on the outer top edge of the timing cover. Could this damage the headgasket?
