The Mother-In-Law Death Grip Posted by Ari [Email] (#2847) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Ari) on Thu, 31 Jan 2002 08:08:59 In Reply to: Door handle sometimes does not work, Don (SaabNuss), Thu, 31 Jan 2002 07:55:32 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Or at least, that's what I like to call it.
The door is held closed by a spring-loaded latch that grabs a pin in the doorframe. When you pull on the handle, a mechanism releases that spring-loaded latch. But if you pull on the handle, that force pulls on the door, and that force loads up the spring loaded latch. If there is a misadjustment in the mechanism, the latch binds, and the door doesn't open.
I call it the Mother-In-Law Death Grip because that's how my mother-in-law opens the car. She grabs the handle and yanks, like she's trying to start a lawn mower. This loads up the latch so it doesn't open, and stresses the hell out of the handle (my m-i-l is one tough customer).
Try this - if you look at the door handle, there's the portion that moves, and the portion that's fixed (at the back of the handle). Put your thumb on the fixed portion, and gently pull the handle, more pushing with your thumb than pulling the handle. The door will open easily, because you're not loading up the latch mechanism.
OK, what else can you do? First, make sure the latch on the door is tightened. Open the door and look at the latch mechanism - make sure the three bolts holding it in place are tight.
The next thing to do is adjust the post in the door frame. Kneel down and close the door, sighting in on the post. Do things look like the line up? Or is the post too high or too low? Adjust for height first, then if it's still sticky, move the post Outward slightly.
OK, how do you move the post? Get a VERY GOOD 6 point 17 mm socket (I prefer a closed end wrench). The nut on the post is very thin, and it's very easy to bunge it up. So don't use a 12 point wrench, and make sure everything is on nice and straight before you try and loosen things.
Sometimes the post won't loosen, so that's why I recommend you learn some of the other tricks, like pushing with your thumb.
Good luck!
